Column Dresses and Evening Gowns

Let’s take the focus away from the bride for once and talk about what to wear to a wedding if you’re not walking down the aisle. When I think of wedding wear, the first thing that comes to mind is a knee-length cocktail dress, but I’m considering wearing a floor-length dress to a wedding I’ll be attending soon. With the right cut and a pair of heels, floor-length dresses can be absolutely chic and figure-flattering.
For an afternoon wedding or outdoor wedding, consider a dress in pastel colors. It suits the occasion better, not to mention that a pastel-colored dress will stand out once the day turns into night. This dress is mostly unadorned except for the ruffled trim on the sleeves, which gives you a lot of room to play with accessories – try a headband with a large flower or a beaded clutch.
Dresses in darker colors are good too, especially if the wedding will take place in a hotel ballroom. This particular cut – deep v-neck and empire waist – is perfect for petite girls because it gives the illusion of height.
For truly formal affairs, consider a A-line evening gown with a full skirt.
I wouldn’t wear a full evening gown to an outdoor wedding though; the hem of your dress is bound to get all dirty!

Watters & Watters Bridesmaids Dresses

A few days ago, I contemplated wearing a column dress or evening gown to a friend’s wedding, even though I already have a perfectly good cocktail dress sitting in my closet. I finally received my wedding invitation last weekend, and it turns out that the dress code for women really is an evening gown. I panicked a little because the wedding is in less than two weeks, and I don’t own formal attire longer than a knee-length dress. Not to mention that now is the worst time to scour the malls for the right evening gown. The thing is, I don’t want just any mass-produced dress; to be perfectly honest, I think most evening gowns make women look like cheap lounge singers. I expected to spend at least five hours and five thousand pesos on the right evening gown that is to be my default wedding guest dress – but before doing so, I decided to explore cheaper options online.

An initial search on eBay didn’t yield anything I liked, but a friend accidentally found some wedding wear for me while she was looking for her own evening gown of her own. It’s a v-neck empire dress from Watters & Watters just like the one shown above, except the one on eBay was a deep purple color. Aside from streamers below the deep v back, the dress is unembellished. I fell in love with it immediately – the style is slimming and flattering, the lack of embellishments makes it easy to accessorize, and it comes in my size. Best of all, the dress only cost P600! Out of curiosity I decided to Google the brand, and it turns out that Watters & Watters specializes in wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses. While the dress I bought is technically a bridesmaid’s dress, I suppose it’s all right for a wedding guest to wear it.
I was pretty impressed with Watters & Watters’ selection of bridesmaids dresses (wedding guest dresses?) and thought you guys might appreciate a look see. You might get some ideas for your bridesmaids or for a dress to wear to a friend’s wedding!
This trendy tiered dress is made of stone duchess satin and is finished with an ebony ribbon below the bust. Definitely a very fashion-forward yet wedding-appropriate dress.
If I saw this dress on eBay Philippines, I would’ve bought it in a heartbeat! Made of leaver lace, this dress features a crumb-catcher bodice with a dupioni silk skirt and sash. If you order it from Watters & Watters, they can have it made in floor length, but I think the knee-length style looks better.
There’s even a vintage-style dress on the website. This satin back tafetta dress features a shirred midriff and ballet length skirt that was all the rage in the 50s.
This duchess satin evening gown looks very elegant with its full skirt and deep blue color.
Finally, the ruffled long skirt of this iridescent chiffon dress reminds me of Vera Wang’s dreamy dresses. Definitely a dress I wouldn’t hesitate to buy, especially since it only costs a fraction of what a Vera Wang dress will. Dresses at Watters & Watters start at $200 and take several weeks to make. Maybe mine was a factory overrun? In any case, the seller said there weren’t any defects on my dress. I can’t wait til it comes in the mail!

DIY Halter Dress

While all of us are busy combing the malls trying to find an evening gown to wear for an upcoming wedding, my friend Liz came up with a great idea based on this DIY halter dress tutorial. Instead of looking for a dress, she’ll buy a light fabric, tie it around the neck, then finish it off with a loud chunky DIY belt to avoid looking too beachy and informal. I think it’s an awesome quick fix for when you simply don’t have the time or money to spend on finding the evening gown. In the end, no one will be able to tell that it’s not a “real dress”! Try it next time you need a dress ASAP.

2011 Lace Wedding Gown

Lace wedding brides tend to attract brides-to-be who want that classic, ultra-feminine wedding day look. This spring, however, designers reinvented the lace wedding dress and used this staple fabric in modern (even sexy) ways. Check out some of the lace wedding dresses we spotted on the spring 2011 runway!
Instead of an all-over lace dress, this strapless gown by Angel Sanchez makes use of lace embellishments across the ballgown skirt for texture.

A classically romantic dress by Douglas Hammant. This dress bares more skin than the average wedding dress with the low sweetheart neckline.
Another classic dress, this time from Rivini. Unlike the lace dress of old, which flows softly, this dress has a structured silhouette.
I love lace overlays, and this dress by Casablanca Bridal is a great choice for brides who want to show a little skin without being too revealing.
One of my favorite lace dresses of the season is from Monique Lhuillier’s spring 2011 bridal collection. This dress is a high-fashion take on the traditional Filipiniana garb.

Sexy Wedding Gowns

A lot of modern brides are veering away from the traditional white wedding gown that barely shows anything and steering towards trendy wedding gowns that barely cover anything. The vampy bride selects gowns that show a generous portion of her cleavage, thighs, midsection or lower back.

Wedding Veil Style

The wedding veil that you choose depends on how formal your wedding will be and your overall look – the veil should complement your wedding gown, not overpower it. You also need to consider how you’ll be wearing your hair. You can get a veil that will cover your hair at the ceremony then remove it at the reception to show off your hairstyle, or choose a hairstyle that will support the veil and that you will wear during the entire event.

Flower Girl Dresses

Flower girls are the sweetest addition to your wedding entourage so long as they stay behaved during the entire ceremony. One of the greatest things about finding the right flower girl dresses is that they don’t necessarily have to match the bridesmaids dresses. The flower girl dress can be anything you want and can come in any color combination that plays a prominent part in your entourage’s attire.

Traje de Boda

wedding_gown_009.jpg

Traje de boda is the European influence in Philippine bridal fashion. A bride can become as fashionable as she wants to be – she can even wear black to her wedding if she wants to! This is what Shriley Arambulo-Lustado believes when she makes custom-made wedding gowns for each bride-to-be that comes to her. Her wedding gowns are priced according to how intricate the design will be. Php 15,000 will get you a gorgeous wedding gown with no beadwork; for Php 30,000 you can get a fully-beaded wedding gown. All wedding packages include bridal accessories (pouch bag, veil, rhinestone hairpins/hairpiece, cord, arrhae, 2nd veil, matches, garter, and two pillows for the ring and arrhae).

Ready to Wedding

Ready-to-wear is a term used to describe mass-produced clothes made in standard sizes; some of them are made in large quantities, others are more exclusive and limited. Regardless of the quantities made, ready-to-wear clothing is never one of a kind. Ready-to-wear wedding gowns are more practical for the bride with no time to have a custom-made gown created specifically for her. They’re also more affordable than a custom gown by a couturier; brides with a limited budget who would rather spend on the venue or food can opt for a ready-to-wear wedding gown instead.
Lya Armovit’s Ready to Wed line contains exquisite, high-quality ready-to-wear wedding gowns and dresses for the entire entourage. For Php 25,000 you can get a bridal gown and dresses for your bridesmaids, secondary sponsors, and flower girls. Visit her boutique at Bagumbayan, Quezon City to try out the wedding gowns in her collection and find the perfect one for your wedding.

Miniature Wedding Gowns

Jazel Sy understands that wedding gowns must be catered to suit a bride’s personality. Whether she’s traditional, romantic, or avante-garde, she can come up with a design that will suit your taste at a price that you can afford. But aside from making custom bridal gowns, she can make you a lovely keepsake to help immortalize one of the best days of your life – a Barbie-sized version of your wedding gown.
Bridal packages offer different wedding gown styles, material, and are inclusive of accessories. The Royalty Package is good for fourteen members of the entourage and includes a fully-beaded, corset-style ball gown with a cathedral train.

Fiber Goat Wedding

Granted this didn’t come from a Cashmere goat, but we thought it so original we had to post it. Louise Fairburn, a sheep breeder in England, spun her wedding dress from wool taken from her favorite Lincoln Longwool, Olivia. This Daily Mail story has more pictures, including a great one of Louise and Olivia.

Gold Hair Accessories for Fall 2009

Yesterday, I talked about how gold-embellished wedding dresses are making the runway glitter this fall. The general rule I follow for accessories is to choose colors that complement the embellishments in order to make them stand out more. If you want to follow the gold fall 2010 wedding trend, you might want to place a hint of gold on your hair. Try using one of these accessories.

This gold-plated metal ribbon adds romantic, glinting weaves throughout the hair. Perfect for a tousled up-do and free-flowing gown.

Your gold accessory doesn’t have to be made entirely of gold; try a hair accessory with a little touch of color. These hand-made clay cherry blossoms were glued on to a headband and worn as a tiara.

Bridal Gowns

joel_bautista_wedding_gowns.jpg

Joel Bautista began his designing career while he was still in med school, not knowing that over a decade later he would become one of the country’s most sought-after wedding couturiers. Throughout that period, his unique creations for locals, expatriates, and celebrities carved himself a name in the local fashion industry. Brides especially love the intricate beadwork and detailed craftmanship of his wedding gowns. Even if you’re on a budget, getting a couture bridal gown from Joel doesn’t have to be expensive; his versatility allows him to work around the amount you’re willing to spend.

Every bride wants to wear a custom-designed wedding gown and as much as possible, she would like her entourage to wear gowns and barongs that match her wedding’s theme. However, custom-designed wedding wear for an entire entourage can be very expensive.
